Editorial: Hitting the Nail on the Head with Wii U

The dust has settled, and we now know a lot more about the Wii U. For the past year and a half, I have been skeptical in what the Wii U could bring to the table. My concerns were rightfully founded. Nintendo had given no reason to buy a Wii U. However, that all changed yesterday. Nintendo took to the stage and did exactly what they needed to do. They better defined their product and did a much better job at showing off their software.

E3  was a disaster for Nintendo. The only 2 games that I saw that impressed me were Zombi U and Assassin’s Creed 3. Nintendo made a big deal about Assassin’s Creed 3 and Batman Arkham City. That was a monumental mistake on Nintendo’s part. Batman Arkham City will have been out for over a year by the time the Wii U launches. Assassin’s Creed 3 isn’t going to be a Wii U exclusive. Assassin’s Creed 3 will be out on Xbox 360 and PS3 weeks before the Wii U even launches.

Going into the press event yesterday, we needed more than a price and release date. We needed a strong and established IP from a third-party to be a Wii U exclusive. Zombi U looks great, but it isn’t an established IP. Pikmin 3 looks good, but it isn’t third-party.  Where is a “console buyer” that Nintendo sorely needs to keep fans excited and sell units?

Enter Platinum Games. Platinum Games gained a lot of recognition with their highly popular hit, Bayonetta. Many fans, including myself have been begging for a sequel. Rumors earlier this year reported that Sega, the publisher of the first Bayonetta title had scrapped the well sought after sequel.

Nintendo not only revealed Bayonetta 2 as a Wii U title, it was revealed as an exclusive. This has everybody talking. Nintendo fans are very happy. People who don’t like Nintendo are furious.I feel like people are stuck on this notion of what makes a hardcore gamer hardcore. Some of the tweets I’ve seen have been unnecessarily angry. People are condemning Platinum games and Bayonetta 2 just due to its exclusivity and that comes off as childish and petty.

Bayonetta 2 is a console buyer. I’ve seen a lot of people decide to buy a Wii U for Bayonetta 2. Nintendo has done it. There is finally an enthusiastic hype for the Wii U. A lineup of Pikmin 3, Zombi U and Bayonetta 2 have me excited for the Wii U. My Deluxe Wii U package is preordered. Is Yours?
